Roxanne Shaw started making devotional art in 1994 at the age of 14. She learned how to paint from her mother Catherine Robles-Shaw.     Catherine's first year in Spanish Market was 1995 and Roxanne was not yet in the youth market but was allowed to sell her first 5 retablos at her mother's booth. In 1996 Roxanne received the Judges Award for Unusual Creativity for an Adam and Eve retablo and a Purchase Award for a Flight into Egypt retablo at Spanish Market. Both pieces are in permanent collection at the Museum of Spanish Colonial Arts. Roxanne received third place in the 1997 Spanish Market for a triptych Retablo. In 1998, she received an award for Best Retablo in her age division (13-17) for a large piece featuring Guadalupe, San Miguel, San Rafael, San Gabriel, and Guardian Angel.
In 1999, Roxanne did a Developing artist program offered by SCAS where she did an apprenticeship under Gustavo Victor Goler. They analyzed the works done by the old master Santeros by visiting the collection of Larry Frank, the author of New Kingdom of Saints. To view the modern styles and techniques used by modern day Santeros they visited Good Hands Gallery in Santa Fe and Charles Carrillo art studio. During the nights she stayed at Rubel Jaramillo's and continued carving into the night.
